Focșani is the county seat of Vrancea County. It is known as the “City on the Milcov River,” where Stephen the Great established the border between Moldavia and Wallachia in 1482. After the Union of the Principalities, Focșani is known as the “City of Union,” becoming a symbol of the ideal of Unification, as on July 6, 1862, Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed the decree unifying Focșani, both from Moldavia and Wallachia, which until then had been divided by the Milcov River between the two principalities.
