Bacău County, located in the eastern part of the Eastern Carpathians, covers an area of 6,606 square kilometers, representing approximately 2.8% of the country’s total area. With a population of 583,590 inhabitants, it ranks eighth in the country in terms of population. The climate in this region is temperate continental, characterized by warm and relatively dry summers, contrasted by cold winters.
The county stands out on the country’s cultural map due to its numerous museums, memorial houses, historical, artistic, and architectural monuments, artistic institutions, cultural magazines, libraries, publishing houses, printing presses, and bookstores. Here, there are two branches of the Union of Plastic Artists (U.A.P.), as well as the “Vasile Alecsandri” Cultural Houses in Bacău and Onești. Moreover, the county hosts several cultural events of national and international importance annually. Administratively, Bacău County consists of 3 municipalities: Bacău, Onești, and Moinești, 5 towns, and 85 communes.
Bacău Municipality
Bacău is the county seat of Bacău County, located in the Moldavia region, Romania. It is situated on the banks of the Bistrița River and hosts two hydroelectric power plants (Bacău I and Bacău II), which contribute to the local electricity supply. The city covers an area of 43 square kilometers, and its population is approximately 144,307 inhabitants according to data from 2011.
Bacău is connected to the European road network through the E85 and E574 roads, providing links to Bucharest, the northern part of the country, and Transylvania. National and international rail transport is facilitated by the CFR network. Additionally, the city has an international airport, which offers regular flights to various domestic and European destinations
