Calea Unirii, Burdujeni

Burdujeni is a suburban neighborhood of the municipality of Suceava, located approximately 4 kilometers northeast of the town center. Until the interwar period, Burdujeni was a separate locality with its own town hall and administration, distinct from that of the city of Suceava. In 1926, it was incorporated as a neighborhood of the city and is currently, in terms of area and population, the largest neighborhood in Suceava.

The Village of Burdujeni

The village of Burdujeni initially emerged around the Teodoreni Monastery, and agriculture was the primary occupation of its inhabitants. Later, workers from the slaughterhouse, railway, and various employers appeared. Between 1775 and 1918, during the period when Bukovina was under Austro-Hungarian rule, the locality became a Romanian border point. Burdujeni is the only neighborhood of contemporary Suceava that was not part of the historical region of Bukovina.

Expansion of the Burdujeni Neighborhood

The most significant period of changes and expansion for Burdujeni was during the communist years. After 1960, the industrial platform “Valea Sucevei” was built in the southern floodplain of the Suceava River. After 1970, the Cuza Vodă neighborhood emerged, with residential blocks built mainly for workers employed in the factories and plants in the industrial area. All these developments transformed Burdujeni into a “workers’ neighborhood.” Burdujeni-Sat remained the only old area with a rural character. After 2000, shopping centers such as Iulius Mall and Shopping City Suceava appeared on the sites of some of the closed-down factories.
