Midway Atoll Cam, Sand Island

This live webcam shows a remarkable view of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, home to the world’s largest seabird breeding colony. Known in Hawaiian as Kuaihelani, Midway Atoll is found on Sand Island, part of the Midway Islands in Hawaii, USA. From this remote spot in the Pacific, the stream looks north to north-east across the calm lagoon, capturing daily scenes of wildlife in its natural setting. The camera is provided by Friends of Midway Atoll (FOMA), a non-profit organisation that works closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Their role is to help protect and manage both the wildlife refuge and the Battle of Midway National Memorial. Through this live feed, viewers can follow the entire breeding season of mōlī (Laysan albatross) and ka‘upu (black-footed albatross). Each year, from late October or early November, adult birds return to Kuaihelani to meet their lifelong partners and begin nesting. Over the months, you may see courtship displays, egg-laying, chick rearing and fledging. Watching this cycle unfold offers a peaceful and fascinating glimpse into island life. To find Sand Island, also known as the Midway Islands, please see our map further down the page. If you enjoy this live view, consider donating to FOMA to help keep the camera running and support wildlife conservation at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.
